Circular economy, Scarlino reclamation begins

The reclamation of the Scarlino plant, in the province of Grosseto, managed by Iren Ambiente, a company of the Iren Group, is progressing. Today the president of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani, the councilor for the environment Monia Monni and the councilor for production activities Leonardo Marras carried out an inspection of the area accompanied by the mayors and regional councilors of the area as well as by the CEO of Iren Ambiente Eugenio Bertolini and the development manager of Iren Ambiente Luca Galimberti.

During the visit to the construction site Iren Ambiente announced the demolition of the two old chimneys of the waste-to-energy plant that occupied the industrial site and illustrated the next phases of the reclamation, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In this phase, preliminary to the start of the construction sites of the new project, the recovery and recovery is envisageddisposal of metal scrap, insulation, refractories, aggregates (from reinforced concrete), as well as the disposal of polluted soil. Following obtaining the certification, Iren Ambiente will start the project for the integrated circular economy hub, with an investment of 150 million.

“It is exciting to see this change – said President Giani – Tuscany has chosen to proceed without delay on the circular economy route. The new regional programming follows a clear strategy, which aims at the recovery and recycling of materials taken from separate waste collection, with increasingly marginal residues, and at the increasingly targeted treatment and with increasingly innovative technologies of separated waste. Today – he added – we also see Scarlino changing, an area with a strong productive vocation, which will once again be a protagonist of the Tuscan economy, thanks to the new hub, capable of recovering important materials to serve the various districts”.

“A few days ago we saw live the beginning of the demolition of the chimneys of the San Donnino incinerator in Florence, today – underlines councilor Monni – we see the chimneys of the Scarlino waste-to-energy plant removed. They are symbols of a historical passage, of a change of mentality, of a society which, although it may be more or less refractory towards this issue, embraces the basic rules of sustainability and equips itself with structures for the recovery of its waste. The absence of these chimneys is proof of this tangible evidence of a strong political will: here a place will be born where industrial waste materials will be treated and recovered, a possibility given by technological progress that only a few years ago might have seemed like a utopia. This project is truly exemplary, both for the result and for the process of truly listening to the territory, which led to the abandonment of the idea of a new waste-to-energy plant in favor of a technological center for the recovery of material, an important and innovative plant which, among other things, confirms and demonstrates the the Region’s desire to invest in the industrial development of one of the most important production areas in Tuscany”.

“The project for the new Iren plant – comments councilor Marras – is a sign of hope for the relaunch of the Scarlino industrial area after the great difficulties of recent months and is a concrete response for our territory also from an employment point of view The Casone di Scarlino will be enriched with a very advanced technological structure, serving the Maremma, but also some of the most important industrial chains in Tuscany, in the name of the circular economy”.

“It is essential for the Iren Group to share this important project with our stakeholders, which continues unabated to be able to create value for our territories, from a circular economy perspective – declares the CEO of Iren Ambiente Bertolini -. Thanks to the competence, vision and seriousness of Iren Ambiente, and of the entire Group, Scarlino will have a new system, in total discontinuity compared to the past, ‘integrated’, that is, unitary but with interactions between the various areas and ‘circular’, to generate produced from waste. A new reference center which, at full capacity, will involve around 150 resources: a new life for this structure, for the surrounding environment, and for the entire community”.

The project involves the installation of four systems:

● A pulper treatment plant (paper mill waste) and waste plastics that cannot be exploited by recovery plants;
● A purification plant for the treatment of liquid waste, which involves the expansion of the existing chemical-physical treatment plant with the addition of the biological treatment section, capable of purifying flows containing metals and organic and ammonia components;
● A wood treatment plant which, by treating wood from separate waste collection, will be able to produce finished products (pressed pallets) or components for the production of pallets (blocks);
● A sludge treatment plant using «hydro thermal carbonization», which will produce bio-coal suitable for various uses: as fuel, equivalent raw material for numerous other industrial processes, or fertilizer.
