The tradition and wine culture of the Ribera del Duero come together in an event that promises to exalt the excellence of the region’s wines, strengthening ties of brotherhood and highlighting those who have contributed to the dissemination of its heritage.
On June 10, 2023, the Ribera del Duero Wine Brotherhood will hold its XVI Great Chapter, a majestic event that will take place in the Peñafiel Castle, located in the province of Valladolid. This event, which is among the most prestigious in the wine calendar, is governed by the statutes of the Brotherhood and alternates between the areas of Peñafiel and Aranda de Duero, enriching the municipalities that make up the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin.
This year, the Grand Chapter has been meticulously organized, ensuring that the celebrations are of the highest calibre. The acts will begin at five in the afternoon at the Agrifood Center. The participation of brotherhoods from various regions of Spain, as well as from Portugal and France is expected. Participants will be received with coffee and local sweets, courtesy of the Center, accompanied by spirits offered by the Brotherhood of Wines and Orujo de Liébana.
A unique feature of this event is the incorporation of dulzaineros, who, courtesy of the Peñafiel City Council, will entertain the reception and lead a procession to the Church of San Miguel de Reoyo. This processional parade, scheduled for 5:45 p.m., will take place through various streets and squares, including Plaza San Miguel de Reoyo and Calle Príncipe de Viana.
At 6:00 p.m., the Church of San Miguel de Reoyo will be the scene of a Holy Mass, which will be officiated by Fr. Agustín Alcalde Arriba, Prior of the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de La Vid. This mass will have a commemorative character, paying tribute to the brothers who have died since 2020.
Subsequently, attendees will be transferred by bus to Peñafiel Castle, courtesy of the Valladolid Provincial Council. At 7:00 p.m., there will be a visit to the recent facilities of the castle, where a wine tasting will be offered accompanied by Alimentos de Valladolid products.
The climax of the evening will be the XVI Grand Chapter, which will take place in the Assembly Hall of Peñafiel Castle at 8:00 p.m. During this act, personalities who have contributed to the dissemination of Ribera del Duero wines will be recognized. Among them, Mr. Vicente Vallés Choclán, journalist and writer, and Mr. Cristóbal Muñoz Ortega, Chef of the Ambivium Restaurant in Peñafiel, will be named Honorary Brothers. In addition, D. Juan Manuel Gómez Bedoya, D. Favila Quintana Alonso and M. Yvon Jousson will be distinguished as Merit Confraternities.
At the end of the day, at 10:00 p.m., a fellowship dinner will be held at Asador Mauro 2 in Peñafiel. The evening will culminate with a draw for Ribera del Duero wines among the attendees.
On Sunday June 11, those interested will have the opportunity to visit the Toy Museum in Fompedraza and the Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena, to finally enjoy lunch at Mesón Los Doce Arcos in Traspinedo, thus closing a packed weekend. of culture and tradition.
